Title Troubles

I hate choosing titles. And I don’t think I am particularly good at it either.
So I need some help…

My new trilogy is called The Mirage Makers.
The first book – out in a couple of weeks – is called “Heart of the Mirage”.
The third book is called “Song of the Shiver Barrens”.
The second book is called…um…
The damn thing is finished and I still don’t know! Half a dozen words and I spend more time on them than two or three chapters of writing.

So, what do you think of Born of the Riven World for book 2? Does it resonate with you? Make you want to buy it?
For the trilogy, Trudi Canavan suggested:

Heart of the Mirage
Sword of the Mirage
Song of the Mirage

but I think they are too similar to one another to be individually memorable, even though each is a good title.

  1. Just a random opinion on the net mind you, but I like the Riven one.

I’m not crazy about ones that match like a set of steak knives. Although Orson Scott Card did just fine with his Homecoming saga–Call of Earth, Memory of Earth, Ships of Earth, etc.

  2. (Ah see, Karen – my brain is mushed too and I don’t have a Rita to blame.) Ok, I have corrected that. And thought of another title too:

    Harvest of the Riven World

  3. Like the word “Riven” but the “Born of the Riven World” sounds a litle long and clunky, frankly.
Alliteration is a seductive thing for me in titles.

  4. Trouble is the editor wants the 3 titles to be similar…that’s why the original “Exaltarch” is not in favour. I tell you, this title thingy is far tougher than writing half a dozen chapters, and it takes twice as long.

    Rebels of the Riven World?

    AAARgh!

  5. I must admit I like the three Trudi Canavan suggested, but I tend to like the titles to be similar like that…

The Riven one’s all remind me of David Edding’s Belgariad/Mallorean, although I think he spelt it Rivan.

  6. Thanks for the comments…in the end I sent a list of suggestions to my editor. We’ll see what she says – often people on the production side have their own ideas!

Someone will have to make up their mind soon as it won’t be long before the book is in production…
