And the earth moved too?
“Same-sex ‘marriage’ is a movement driven by wealthy homosexual activists and a liberal elite determined to destroy not only the institution of marriage, but democracy as well.”
—Family Research Council president Tony Perkins, on the day the Vermont legislature voted to legalize same-sex marriage. (Quote via Slate).
Obviously said by someone who doesn’t understand the meaning of democracy.
Or the meaning of – Oh, why bother. He’s just daft.
I guess my comment is “no comment”. LOL
Leaves one speechless, doesn’t it.
Other issues aside, democracy is an institution that can conceivably be ‘destroyed’ / abandoned through its own processes..
Yes, indeed, Christopher. And one of the dangers is that people decide that “they” and “their kind” are the ones who should determine who should have the freedoms and the rights and who should not. The man who made this statement obviously thought not everyone should have equal rights.
Actually, I do remember an interesting conundrum for a democracy not so very long ago. There was a democratic election held in an African country, in which one party stated beforehand their intention of doing away with the constitution if they won, and replacing it with something which was decidedly not going to be democratic, but a rather nasty religious theocracy.
There would never have been another democratic election if they came into power.
And they did win.
So what do you do, hmm?
In this case, the army stepped in and …in the name of democracy… and prevented a democratically elected government from taking power.
Now that’s irony.
