Summary:
Braise Sangmêlé had been sworn never not to give the feet to Point-of-Gorth, den of all that the Glorieuses islands count of desperate, traffickers, swindlers and criminals without faith nor law, ready to kill father and mother for some piécettes.

But the Vigils, which reign as Masters on the archipelago, do not hear it this ear. Ember is the only one with being able to conclude a delicate mission for their account: to bring back most discreetly possible the castenelle one of Cirkase in escape.

Hardly unloaded, Braise realizes that something does not turn out badly: its investigation runs up against the dumbness of the sailors and a worrying odor of magic dyes with carmine seems to stick to least its steps. Because, in addition to being one fighting except par, army of a sword to the exceptional proportions, Braise Sangmêlé have the gift of Perspicacity which enables him to see the magic with work. Though very useful, this talent made of it a target of choice for the wizards of any hair who hardly appreciate that one interferes oneself their projects.

In other words, Braise was still put in dirty cloths…
.

Over at ActuSf, there is an interview with Thibaud Eliroff who is the J’ai Lu editor for fantasy. Interestingly enough, he remarks that fantasy genre is in its infancy in France – and growing fast.

I like the bit at the end about The Aware which translates (vaguely) as:
Behind what appears at first glance to be a mix of thriller, pirate film and humour (who said Monkey Island?) is a portrait of a woman who has not been spared by life, and a scathing critique of U.S. imperialism. A book which is fun and challenging at the same time.

Wow.

Below are a couple of extracts.

He concludes by saying:

Which is lovely of him. (Merci, Christophe!)

And just in case you missed the last bit, my translation is: “Born in the land of kangaroos, Glenda Larke is without a doubt one of the major exponents of the renewal* of fantasy… This is good news indeed.”

Having just got back from a trip where we had kangaroos bounding out of the bushes bent on mass suicide – and possibly homicide and vehicular mayhem as well – I am inclined to think that, yep, this is indeed a land of kangaroos, as well as good fantasy (heh).

I even got a photograph to prove it.

*(Possibly referring to the new large format collection of the publisher J’ai Lu)

I haven’t spoken French since 1994, which is when we left Tunisia, so my French is a bit shaky. But I think they said that this trilogy has identified me as a rising star of the Antipodes. Wow.

I have a strange reaction to the translation of Blaze Halfbreed, though. Somehow Braise Sangmêlé sounds – to my English-attuned but vaguely-French-conversant ears– like a rare steak. You know, braised mixed blood.
