I love it, love it, love it.

Another great cover from Larry Rostant (the cover artist) and the design team at Orbit, who produce the best covers in the business, bar none.

And there on the front cover is a terrific quote from another of my favourite authors of unputdownable books. Kate Elliott did the one for Heart of the Mirage, and now I have Karen Miller – love these guys.

And just look at the art work. We have the Tyranian city of Tyr in the background, but the cracked sky above is that of the Mirage.

And there’s the winged spear and symbol of Tyrans – but look, the shadowed pattern to the right is the pattern of the Mirager’s sword (see the cover of Heart of the Mirage). And if you look carefully, you will notice that the wing to the right is dark and broken and drooping. Tyr is in trouble – Ligea is on her way to extract revenge for the wrongs done to her….

That is one heck of a good cover.

And just to add to my cup of Amazon goodies, I see that they have put up the first advert for the French version of The Aware here. No pix as yet, or release date, but ah, those magic words: GRANDS FORMATS.
Yep, my first trade paperback (i.e. large size), and it comes from J’Ai Lu…
C’est formidable…

The title? CLAIRVOYANTE , book 1 of Les Iles Glorieuses

Life is so exciting. And today I am off to tropical isles…more about that in another post if I have time before I go.

I have just read the second in this Godspeaker series. It is called The Riven Kingdom, and I am still thinking about it – the sign of a great read. It’s not out yet, but you can buy Book 1 (above) in Australia. I think Karen Miller is one the most amazingly versatile writers I know – sf media tie-ins, classic fantasy, classic swords & sorcery, comic fantasy – she can and does do it all, and very well indeed. Remember her name.

Drop in here for another Fantastic Women interview by Karen, this time of Rachel Caine.

And now I guess the world is beginning to recover from the Potter hysteria epidemic. Somehow I have been left with a nasty taste in my mouth and I have been trying to analyse why. Instead of celebrating the launch of a long awaited book, we seem to have been deluged by tales of venality, gleeful spoilers, and cynical greed. And depressing accounts of how the whole Potter mania has not added up to a growing readership for books. It seems that for most, it’s just a cool thing to do because you can talk/SMS/blog/argue about it afterwards, not because reading a gripping story is satisfying of itself, and something you will want to do again and again with other authors. That is so sad.

Here in Malaysia, the big book chains, who have delighted in undercutting the independent book sellers for quite some time, found themselves the target of similar price cutting. The hypermarkets – so unsporting of them – suddenly announced the day before that they were giving huge price cuts of book 7 . And here they don’t usually sell books at all!

So the book chains got together and refused to sell Potter to anyone who hadn’t pre-ordered. Nice. I am not sure who I am miffed at here, but somehow I think the consumer will suffer, along with authors, in the end.

And was I out there buying the book? No. Fraid not. They are exactly the kind of book I would have loved to read when I was a kid, but I am not a kid any longer, and there is just so much more out there that I prefer and time is so precious…so I did read the first two, to see what all the fuss was about, and stopped. I am finally grown up…

[The first book was Empress of Mijak – it is already out in Australia – and this second one is called The Riven Kingdom.]

Unfortunately the wretched woman only gave me two thirds of The Riven Kingdom and I am left biting my nails waiting for the third segment. Talk about torture. I am so involved with the characters I just don’t want to wait. Beta reading? Forget it. I just want to know how it is all going to turn out… It’s just as well for Karen that she lives in Sydney and I’m in Kuala Lumpur.

Anyway, maybe to placate my ire at being left dangling, the lovely Karen has said some rather nice things, and put up an interview she did with me, on her blog. You can find it through her website here

Better still, she is also going to be interviewing some other fabulous writers, such as Rachel Caine, in the future. So, if you want to know more about me, hop over there. And if you want to be kept on the edge of your seat, try reading her Godspeaker trilogy.
