I think cowbirds are probably the same as cuckoos in their gape, Jo. All birds have this trigger, I think. Genetic programming.

I was interested to learn about the mouth "gape" colours and that cuckoos can imitate the host birds. Cow birds act like cuckoos I wonder if their offspring can do the same.
