They are pelicans on a mud island in Lake Eyre, seen from the air. For those non-ozzies, Lake Eyre has water in it every 10 or 20 years or so. Most of the time it is just an enormous inland salt pan, without a bird in sight.

In the mysterious way that birds have, when the water arrives, so do they – to feed and nest. The water on this occasion is coming from Queensland. Take a look at a map, and see just how far it has come, along rivers that are usually dry.
