One part of my brain is trying to fathom why – e.g. is he simply a violent bully, or ill, or on mind-altering substances, or was it perhaps the last in a series of frustrations that led to a burst of impotent rage (‘this bloody country, you can’t even pick the flowers any more!’). Yes, he does sound like a possible wife (or child, or animal) beater.

Then again, that reminds me of a comment made about a senior UK figure recently, along the lines of their being the kind of person who would walk past (or step over) someone that was lying bleeding to death on the ground with a knife in their back, and then declare loudly and fervently, ‘The person who did this needs help!’

You’re right, stealing from the community is still stealing. And (from the sounds of it) he can hardly claim that he needed the flowers to feed his starving family.

Humans. Maybe the butchered hand teaches them best. :
