Serge stockings. Oh lord, do I remember those horrible things. We had to wear stockings to school - black ones, and parents loved to buy serge because they lasted longer. Yuk. And we had to sew up ladders, so stockings ended up having half a dozen seams instead of one. I wonder how many people under 50 can credit that now???

Hope you have a great time, Satima.

By the standards of the times, your family wasn’t poor, Glenda. Nor was mine, yet we got out of bed onto cold lino; the only heated room was the kitchen with its huge fireplace; we four sisters wore hand-me-downs with ne'er a question and nearly all the Christmas gifts we got fitted into one serge school stocking apiece.

With all the violence, divorce, insecurity and crass materialism of today's society, we older persons are well aware of what “poor” really is. Sadly, many children born in the 1960s and later will never know how poor they are.

My blog rounds will be a bit intermittent over the next four months as I am travelling. Adelaide at present, Perth tomorrow for just over a week then England for three months with a side trip to Germany. I'll try to keep my own blog - http://satimaflavell.blogspot.com - up to date as I move on.

Belated happy birthday. :o)

Those are fun childhood memories. And yeah, our relatives' houses in SW England, I can remember waking up in the morning and seeing my breath freeze (well, condense) on the air as I breathed out ... and there'd be ice on the inside of the bedroom windows ... and no, no-one would have said they/we were poor either. My friend Carrie's house is still like that, because she lives in a Cromwellian rebuild cottage... attractive place, but no pampering or fripperies, and hot water bottles a must for about 9 months of the year. :oD

Mud people?
