Mmm…as some of your income is sourced in Australia…you should be able to claim deductions if you file here…but you don’t meet the residency requirements…although technically you aren’t a permanent resident of Malaysia. also some countries are only meant to tax you withholding tax, which is meant to be about 10 to 15 percent. I doubt I could claim relief in a country where I haven't spent the money in the first place...

I am still investigating solutions.

But geez, I hate having to do this. I need a personal assistant-cum-tax-advisor-cum-housekeeper

*MY* tax office is more than content to grab large chunks of my income, thank you veyr much, and I don’t even have to beg them…’Tis true, on the other paw, that I CAN claim exemptions and stuff – every time I go to a con I can write off the trip seeing as I’m on the programming, usually, and I can claim the whole kit and caboodle – travel expenses, lodging, meals – as work expense and therefore deductible. This doesn’t ameliorate the need to actually shell out REAL money when paying for these things at the time, but it comes back to me in taxes. It’s why I have an accountant do this for me. Have you considered talking to one of those, who may have some ideas on the matter?…

(I’m just in the middle of preparing a new tax return, for 2006… yippee…)

Oh, just another thought. Can you elect to be taxed as an Australian subject, and claim back tax relief from Oz?

Um, maybe your way around that would be to 'incorporate' yourself as an offshore company. Doubt you could claim back expenses in a country where you don't have expenses arising, though.

Look on the bright side - at least Malyasia doesn't tax again you on income that's already been taxed elsewhere!

Was thinking of Poring today - well, the hot spa tubs actually, but we did do that tree canopy walk last May. :o)
