As a child I saw them for the first time when I visited what is now the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust. One of the orang-utans loped toward me and hurled a fistful of grit straight into my face. At age six that is pretty scary (and painful!).

Of course one can’t judge an entire species on the basis of one encounter, but the wariness is still there. 😮
