My sister and I grew up in a small Maine town in the 1950's and '60's. Our parents read to us every night and when we discovered the town library that was only open for 4 hours on Friday afternoons, my sister and I thought we had discovered heaven. Since I was socially awkward, books opened portals where I could shut out the world and feel a part of a new and more accepting one. I devoured all of Edgar Rice Burroughs' books before moving on to Fletcher Pratt, A.G. Van Vogt, Lin Carter, etc. In a span of a couple years, Kate and I read everything in the children's area and were chewing our way through the adult fiction. Reading quickly became a self-reinforcing portal to new heights of imagination. That unique satisfaction continues today for both of us, even to the point of writing.

A fierce reader...I like that juxtapositioning of words. I, too, am a fierce reader. I think both you and Trudi seem to have a moment when all things came together. With me, I just can't remember a time when I wasn't wanted to read. Anything. I can't remember a time when I wasn't making up stories in my head as well. It was always the way I put myself to sleep - and still is!!

I am a fierce reader, who takes on one or two books in 'one go'. However I grew up in the Northern Territory outback with no books. When I moved to a South Australian country town at 8, I discovered my gran's special glass bookcase with old smelling books from the 20's - 40's (and her club chairs). From then I was caught by the worlds and stories created by the written word. Aaah.

Kylie Seluka

My Dad read. My Mum read, though not as voraciously. I remember as a child reaching a point where something just 'clicked', and I tore through all the 'readers' at primary school (meant to teach children to read) right up to the highest level. Then I discovered the library. Whoa!
